Advice to a New Homeschooling Mother

I thought I’d share with you a bit of advice I gave to a young mother recently.  She was at her wits end and crying out for help.
Hello,
I just happened upon your blog. I only have four children; but, I can identify with some of your feelings. Having children is indeed a huge responsibility that never ends, just like the work never ends. Allow me to share a few thoughts.First, it sounds like you are exhausted. I’m not sure if you have access to a grandparent or friend who could watch your kids for you or not; but, I think you need a day away. It doesn’t matter what you do. You need some time to clear your head and think. I had half a day last week that did wonders for me.

Second, try to get to bed at a decent hour, so that you can try to get some good sleep.

Third, require everyone to lie down for one hour each afternoon. They may not nap; but, they must lie down. Older ones need an hour of reading each day anyway. During this time, you can rest, read, pray, or do a load of laundry, whatever will help you gear up for the second half of the day.

Fourth, make sure you’re eating fruits and vegetables, dairy and meats, not just high carbohydrate foods. You need nutrients.

Fifth, you may be depressed. Consider speaking with your doctor about whether you need herbal supplements or medication to help for awhile.

Sixth, I agree with the previous commenter, Raising Godly Tomatoes is a good site. You might also look at www.nogreaterjoy.org. They have a free magazine and lots of articles on-line. They have a book called “To Train Up a Child” by Michael & Debi Pearl that is excellent.

Seventh, please know that the first year or two of home schooling is hard for most of us. It must be harder starting with a larger family. Don’t give up!
It does pay off even though we can’t always see results day to day. Look for the good and seize it daily.

Eighth, most of all, pray pray pray pray. You can do all things through Jesus Christ who strengthens you.

God bless!

Something to Think About… Etsy Shop

Hello Blog Friends!

I’m so glad you dropped by today.  I’ve been busy with many things lately.  Today I have to sick children; so, I won’t be spending much time with you.

Here’s my something to think about for today.  I’m thinking about opening an Etsy shop.  I’ve been making dish clothes, coasters, and some other items.  I’m wondering how well Etsy works.

If you have experience with Etsy, either buying or selling, please comment.  I’m wondering if it is worth my time to do it.

Do you currently sell?

How do you determine a price for your handmade things?

Is it worth your time?

Do you make items as a cottage business, or just sell a little handwork here and there?

Anything you can tell me would be very appreciated.

God bless you all!

Trust in the Lord….

Proverbs 11:28
He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

Proverbs 16:20
He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.

Proverbs 20:24
Man’s goings are of the Lord; how can a man then understand his own way?

Proverbs 30:5
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Our family is walking through a difficult time. I need these reminders to be faithful and trust in the Lord no matter what my eyes see or my ears hear. God bless you all; may your trust in God grow.

Proverbs 3:5
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not on thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall make straight thy paths.

ALL not some. We must include him in everything we say and do.

God bless!

Today’s the Day!

Today’s the day! My oldest is 17. That just doesn’t compute in my little old brain. I think of myself at 17. I was crazy in love with my husband-to-be. I was starting college. I was going to be a professional. I just didn’t know what!
I never in a million years would have believed that I would marry my high school sweetheart (in Oklahoma City) , move to a small town, have four count them four children, homeschool, be my husband’s help meet, learn to be as thrifty and frugal as I can, and long for country life! Nope! Never would I have believed it! I’d have looked at you like you were nuts and run!
I remember going through premarital counseling with my honey. The pastor asked if we were going to have children. We looked at each other. We hadn’t even thought about kids. So, we said maybe one or two. (We later became confirmed one child parents; but that’s another story!) Next, Pastor asked us if I was planning to work (teaching) after we had children. I said yes. He said, “What could be more important than teaching your own children?” I just stared at him! Little was I to know that this man, with four children, had just prophesied over my life!!!!!!
Well, all that’s HIStory now. God is perfectly able to change our hearts and change our lives when we ask for HIS perfect will!
Well, I must get busy and help my 17 year old have a happy birthday.
God bless & have a terrific weekend!

It’s Just Not Fair!

It’s just not fair! My oldest son is going to be 17 on Saturday! He’s just growing up too fast. I want to hold on to these days together as long as I can. I know that he’ll be on his own in a few years…fewer and fewer years. I think that my prayers for him must increase as my time with him decreases. He’s in high school full time this year. It’s been quite an adjustment for me. He’s loving it. Maybe it’s just part of Momma learning to let go just a little at a time as he’s learning to be independent and responsible just a little at a time.
One thing’s sure. He and I are both in God’s hands. I pray His perfect will will be done in our lives.

God bless!
